Husband’s Message
摘要
The mid-ninth century Old English elegy commonly known as The Husband’s Message has puzzled scholars of early medieval English literature for centuries. The poem has historically been associated with two other elegies in the Exeter Book, Wulf and Eadwacer and The Wife’s Lament (Klinck AL, The old English elegies: A critical edition and genre study. Montreal: McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2001; Howlett, Neuphilologische Mitteilungen 79:1–10, 1978), which has propelled much of its interpretation as an optimistic response to the dramatic story told by a tragically abandoned female narrator.
