Stonor Family: Letters
摘要
The Stonor letters and papers are a collection of documents belonging to the Stonor family, members of the late-medieval landed gentry based in Oxfordshire, England. The collection is significant to understanding a variety of issues pertaining to the English gentry family, from estate management to family networking, local and legal office, and sociopolitical involvement. Their correspondence affords a privileged insight into the roles and responsibilities of women in the family, highlighting the ways in which they participated in, communicated, and advised on its interests and affairs, and demonstrating the extent to which they had the opportunity to involve themselves in their socioeconomic context beyond the domestic. The letters have been used in scholarship to assess the extent and nature of female literacy during this period, challenging previous misconceptions that the ability to write was necessary for women to be considered “literate,” and suggesting additional criteria to the definition of authorship.
