Jaquette of Luxembourg, a politically astute duchess living in fifteenth-century England, was an active reader of Christine de Pizan, one of the most prolific female authors of the Middle Ages. Through her annotation of British Library Harley MS 4431, a collected works of Christine de Pizan’s writings, Jaquette signaled her engagement with Christine de Pizan’s texts, specifically marking texts and genres popular among her English contemporaries. Looking beyond Jaquette, a careful investigation of the historical record uncovers as many as six additional female readers of Christine de Pizan living in fifteenth-century England, raising exciting questions about Christine’s reception beyond France.
