Gwenllïan ferch Rhirid Flaidd
摘要
Gwenllïan ferch Rhirid Flaidd, one of the earliest extant female poets from Wales, composed a single surviving quatrain. Though once believed to have been composing in the twelfth century, she has more recently been given a c. 1460 floruit, placing her in the same era as other early Welsh female poets including Gwerful Fychan (possibly her mother), Gwerful Mechain (who may have known her), and Alis ferch Gruffudd ab Ieuan ap Llywelyn Fychan, among others. Her poem, which was likely transmitted orally for a number of years before being written down, provides a witty response to a different short poem by an insulting man.
