This chapter examines some of the ways music shapes processes of masculine identification and male comportment in game spaces and how these negotiations resonate beyond those spaces. Listening while gaming has experiential dimensions distinct from practices of listening that occur outside of game space, and the gaming experience is, of course, profoundly shaped by its sonic and musical dimensions. And so, the study of the intersections of gaming, music and identity bears distinctions from the studies of music-identity or gaming-identity on their own. Drawing on examples such as the rapper Lil Uzi Vert, this chapter will explore the nuances of these distinctions while justifying why it is critically urgent to examine game space as a realm where masculinities are experienced, (re)negotiated, experimented with, undermined and asserted.
