The Changing Activities of Circular Economy Frontrunners: What Do Food Packaging Manufacturers Do to Accommodate the Circular Economy?
摘要
The food packaging industry is under pressure to address the adverse effects of the high volume of single-use plastics in circulation. Accordingly, the industry is scaling up innovative food packaging solutions as part of a broader sustainability transition. This study explores the activities of food packaging industry firms who identify as frontrunners in the movement toward the circular economy (CE) as they introduce CE-related innovations. Data garnered from eight such firms identified 14 activities that are changing in the course of the transition to a CE. These activities are grouped into five themes: collaboration, business development, material innovation, material efficiency, and material recirculation. The findings show that the activities influence one another and extend knowledge of the options to implement CE innovations in the packaging industry.
