This chapter explores the selection of Mei Lanfang’s performance repertoire during his 1930 U.S. tour, emphasizing its crucial role in the tour’s success. By balancing artistic integrity with audience accessibility, Mei adapted his plays to suit the cultural backgrounds and aesthetic preferences of American cities. Drawing on local newspaper reports, the chapter reconstructs the repertoire, clarifies specific plays performed, and analyzes audience responses. It reveals how Mei emphasized action-oriented works and universal themes to engage American spectators.
