Lifestyle factors, including poor sleep quality, unhealthy diet, and low socioeconomic status (SES) have been linked to worse genitourinary cancer outcomes. These associations are more prominent in patient populations with prostate cancer (PCa), especially in under-represented minority patient populations. Poor sleep quality due to external factors such as noise pollution, exposure to light at night (LAN), sleep environment, and night-shift work contributes to circadian rhythm disruption, which promotes inflammation and prevents the release of melatonin, known as an otherwise anticancer compound. Dietary habits that contain high fat and carbohydrates have been linked to PCa progression, while lycopene and selenium have been shown to decrease this risk. Metabolic syndrome, specifically obesity has been associated with an increased risk of PCa, all of which may be because of the inflammatory response and cytokine storms and insulin-like growth factor (IGF) signaling activated when consuming fats, carbohydrates, associated with developing obesity. Microbiome of the gut and urinary system has been connected to PCa risk, again due to the inflammatory effect it can have on the prostate. These factors impacting lifestyle socioeconomic status comprise contributors to lower access to resources, poorer living conditions and biological determinants toward amplifying the risk for PCa. In this chapter, we discuss the current understanding of the varying aspects of lifestyle, including sleep and light exposure, and diet on PCa patients’ outcomes and how social determinants of health (SDOH) and environment interact with these outcomes. This knowledge will help identify ways to prevent PCa progression and reduce its impact on patients’ clinical and functional outcomes (e.g., quality of life and adjustment).
