This chapter examines the convergence of geospatial artificial intelligence (GeoAI) and cyberinfrastructure-based geographic information systems (cyberGIS) in advancing human geography research. Leveraging the wide availability of geospatial big data, this chapter illustrates how the integration of GeoAI and cyberGIS can tackle the data, modeling, and computational challenges in various human geography sectors. In particular, the convergence of GeoAI’s advanced modeling capabilities with CyberGIS’s high-performance computing capabilities is highlighted, enabling sophisticated modeling, near-real-time analysis, and high-resolution, high-accuracy, and large-scale processing of diverse geospatial data to reveal the complex relationship between human and environment. A case study on analyzing human sentiments of heat exposure in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, demonstrates the application of this convergence in urban geography. Using location-based social media data, natural language processing model, and cyberGIS capability, the study reveals spatial patterns of human perception of urban heat. This case study shows the potential of GeoAI and cyberGIS in enabling more sophisticated, timely, and scalable analysis in human geography, while also addressing ethical concerns and computational challenges associated with big data.
