Understanding the Link Between Communication, Participative Leadership, and Agricultural Extension Officer Workplace Engagement
摘要
Developing work engagement has been one of the main interests in the field of organisational behaviour and its associated disciplines because of its positive effect on employee performance. This has resulted in considerable research on work engagement, but there have been limited studies on how key variables such as participative leadership and communication influence work engagement. In this chapter, the role of participative leadership on agricultural extension officers’ levels of work engagement is examined using communication as an intervening variable. Data were collected through a cross-sectional survey of 201 agricultural extension officers in four provinces in South Africa and analysed using regression analyses. As hypothesised, the results showed that participative leadership influences work engagement, and these relationships are mediated by organisational communication. The implications of the results for organisational behaviour and communication are discussed; these include how to integrate participative leadership with communication in order to affect the work engagement of agricultural extension officers who are proving to be catalysts to rural food security.
