The 2024 European election in Sweden took place against a backdrop of a turbulent geopolitical situation. Sweden became a member of NATO just months before the election. Most citizens and parties expressed clear support for Ukraine. Public support for the EU was among the highest ever, and the environment, terrorism, and defence were important issues. A reasonable expectation of the election being very European in character was partly met, as seen in the campaigning and results of the election where green and left parties had electoral gains compared to 2019. However, the election in Sweden took place about halfway through the national election cycle, and there are also some typical second-order characteristics, such as lower turnout. Nevertheless, in comparison to the overall EU27 election result, the Swedish result partly goes against the trend of success for radical right parties and decreased votes for green parties.
