The European Parliament elections in Portugal were by far the most European in terms of issues compared to the previous eight. One coalition, seven parliamentary parties, and nine extra-parliamentary parties participated in the elections. The Russian war against Ukraine, the new Pact of Migration and Asylum, and the European Green Deal dominated the campaign. The results were no surprise as the opinion polls accurately predicted them. The victory of the Socialist Party was just by a whisker and did not affect the standing of the new government of adversary Luis Montenegro (Social Democratic Party, PSD). Some Spitzenkandidaten came to Portugal, like the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, supporting candidate Sebastião Bugalho, and Nicolas Schmit, supporting the Socialist candidate, Marta Temido. In 2024, voter turnout increased by 5.72 percentage points compared to the 2019 EP elections.  Last but not least, after the polls, Prime Minister Luis Montenegro and President of the Republic Marcelo Rebelo Sousa supported former Prime Minister Antonio Costa as a candidate for president of the European Council.
