Poland
摘要
Political rivalry during the European Parliament campaign is determined and limited by several factors, including the minimal share of European issues in the election programmes, the emphasis on either highlighting the government’s achievements or harshly critiquing those in power in the domestic arena, limited financial resources for advertising, the maintenance of domestic established positions, and the stabilisation of support for parliamentary groups among the electorate. In the 2024 EP election, the rivalry between the two dominant political blocs on the Polish political scene was clearly visible. One bloc was formed by the parties that constituted the ruling coalition in Poland from 2015 until autumn of 2023. The main political party of this coalition was Law and Justice (Prawo i Sprawiedliwość, PiS). It was rivalled by Civic Coalition (Koalicja Obywatelska, KO). The elections confirmed public confidence in the ruling KO-led coalition and renewed its mandate, enabling these parties to continue their policies. Importantly, the government’s priorities include resolving the conflict with EU institutions over the politicisation of the judiciary, rebuilding Poland’s position in the EU and engaging in crucial debates, and re-establishing relations with its neighbours and key partners, namely Germany, France, Czechia, and to some extent, Ukraine.
