The 2024 EP election in Finland resulted in a few surprises. The most significant was the performance of the Left Alliance (The Left), which greatly surpassed all pre-election polling by going from one to three MEPs. This was largely due to the exceptional popularity of the party leader, Li Andersson, who personally received 13.5% of the total national vote. The other big surprise was the election performance of the Finns Party (ECR), which lost one EP seat. The National Coalition Party (EPP) became the largest party for the sixth consecutive European election in the country. With the party simultaneously leading a four-party coalition government and holding the Presidency, its influence on current Finnish politics is extensive. Turnout was rather disappointing, ending far below the EU average. In this chapter, we discuss the results from an historical perspective of EP elections in Finland.
