Assessment of the Impact of Motorization on the Efficiency of the Urban Road Network: Case Study of Kyiv

National and international experience suggests that a transport modeling is advisable for evaluating the effectiveness of the urban road network. Digital twins, as products of transport modeling, are recognized tools for addressing engineering and management challenges in strategic planning and urban transport infrastructure development. Transport modeling is an important component in developing intelligent transport systems (ITS), which are designed to enhance the efficiency of the urban road network. Typically, the primary measure of urban road network efficiency is the time costs, which are defined by travel time. In Ukraine’s national urban planning practice, one of the key indicators influencing the efficiency of the urban road network is the motorization rate, representing the average number of cars per 1000 inhabitants. In this study, we examine the influence of motorization rate on car travel time using a transport modeling with a digital twin of Kyiv and its suburban areas. This digital twin was developed at the educational research laboratory for spatial planning and transport modeling at Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture. Research has identified a correlation between motorization rate and car travel time, with the nature of this relationship defined by a third-degree polynomial function. Evaluating the efficiency of the urban road network suggests employing six levels of service (LOS). Each level of service characterizes the impact of motorization rate on car travel time, assuming constant car usage rate and unchanged street and urban road network characteristics.
