In Britain and beyond, the politics of immigration and race have become highly salient and polarised. Leaders on the ideological right have propagated post-racial discourses according to which racism has disappeared and anti-racism itself is the problem. Black Lives Matter and the broader racial justice movement have faced backlash from these leaders but also breathed new life into progressive attempts to institutionalise anti-racism. While the concept of multiculturalism has fallen out of favour among left-wing activists and politicians, the arguments and proposals developed in multicultural theory may prove vital to their long-term success. To remain relevant, multiculturalist thinkers need to set out more systematically how the policies they endorse counter the structural drivers of racism and dovetail with the obligations placed on states by international human rights treaties.
