Cognitive processing therapy (CPT), one of the most effective treatments for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), has proliferated over the past three decades, and continues to evolve to enhance patient outcomes and increase its reach across diverse patient populations and treatment settings. This chapter summarizes the recommendations for the future of CPT based on the empirical knowledge and clinical experiences provided by the expert CPT clinicians and researchers who have contributed to this volume. Proposed future directions include a more holistic view of recovery to include functioning and well-being, as well as patient matching to determine who will most benefit from particular modifications of CPT. Other suggestions include the use of advanced technological tools and statistical techniques to better evaluate treatment outcomes and proposed mechanisms, and the development of more scalable versions of the therapy. Improved training materials and increased access to training, with a particular focus on cultural considerations and underserved populations, is also greatly needed.
