Access to evidence-based treatments for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), such as cognitive processing therapy (CPT), can be limited due to logistical barriers, including a lack of trained providers in the patients’ immediate area, transportation time and cost, and scheduling conflicts. Telehealth delivery of PTSD interventions like CPT allows for patients to overcome these barriers and access care through a variety of remote modalities (e.g., clinical video teleconferencing (CVT), phone, mobile apps, etc.). The efficacy of CPT delivered via telehealth is supported by research, which has found it to be efficacious, feasible, and acceptable to both providers and patients. When planning to utilize telehealth, providers must consider several issues related to the therapeutic environment, privacy, safety, licensing, and electronic communication. This chapter reviews the existing research on telehealth CPT, identifies the clinical and logistic considerations for providers utilizing this modality, and presents a case example of a female veteran patient who completed 12 sessions of CPT over CVT. Future directions for research on this topic are also explored. The use of telehealth to deliver CPT allows for a greater availability of evidence-based treatments for trauma survivors who might otherwise be unable to access high quality, effective mental health care for PTSD.

摘要
