Application of Ergonomics and Comparative Analysis of Traditional Farming Practice in Ethiopia

Most traditional farming tasks consist of repetitive motions, working in an awkward posture, excessive force to perform the task, and lifting of heavy items. This has resulted in fatigue, pain, backache, and low work morale, which in turn reduces productive capacity. The study compared three farming jobs and looked at how ergonomic concepts were applied to enhance conventional farming methods in rural areas. The purpose of the assessment is to identify the riskiest agricultural tasks to reduce the incidence of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), enhance farmer safety, and understand how farming practice and risk interact. In particular, the study looks at farming methods in the Gonbat, Dangla, and Bure regions close to Bahir Dar. The results reveal deficiencies in ergonomics and safety precautions within traditional farming practices. Specifically, the task of farming maize shells is identified as particularly risky and requires additional ergonomic solutions. The linear regression result for maize shelling practice shows that age has a significant effect on upper body risk (P = 0.017). The findings provide valuable insights for researchers, academicians, and practitioners involved in the optimization of human well-being and overall system performance in traditional farming practices.
