Investigating the Effect of Crumb Rubber Using as an Aggregate in the Hot Mix Asphalt Mixture Properties

The use of crumb rubber in asphalt applications enhances pavement performance by reducing traffic noise and improving resistance to cracking and rutting. Recent research has focused on the impact of incorporating this waste material into asphalt pavements. This study aimed to assess how using crumb rubber as an aggregate affects asphalt pavement performance. Different percentages of crumb rubber were mixed into asphalt mixtures using the dry process and evaluated using the Marshall method. The study conducted experiments with varying CR content (0%, 1%, 2%, 3%) with coarse rubber particles (5–6 mm) and binder content (4%, 4.5%, 5%, 5.5%, 6%). The results showed that adding 3% crumb rubber increased asphalt pavement thickness by 5.4%, decreased bulk specific gravity by 1.67%, increased deformation by 44.48%, decreased stability by 31.74%, decreased indirect tensile strength by 36.1%, and decreased optimum design bitumen content by 0.85%. The study concluded that crumb rubber content affects both Marshall and volumetric properties, as well as binder content. Future research should explore the effects of different crumb rubber sizes on asphalt properties.
