Fast charging of electric vehicles is important for drivers who cannot charge overnight or while at work, and obviously along highways. Latter is the topic of the R&D project that triggered the presented adoption of SUMO to realistically simulate fast and smart charging. Fast charging is characterised by a state-of-charge related charging power decline, which is added to the existing charging station model and executed using TraCI. Smart charging limits the total power drawn from the electric grid, i.e., dynamically limits the sum drawn by the charging points that constitute a charging site, and is implemented by grouping charging points and regularly adjusting the individually provided power. First, the implementation and required code extensions to realize these features in SUMO are presented in detail. Second, simulation results based on a finite multi-server queueing model show the practical effects of fast and smart charging at highway charging sites.
