Climate change poses severe impacts on Southern Africa’s nature-based destinations. Nature-based destinations are critical for biodiversity protection, cultural heritage preservation, and livelihoods in the local community. The purpose of this chapter is to explore the literature on the climate change vulnerability of nature-based destinations in Southern Africa. Using a qualitative methodology through desk research or document research, a sample of 46 journal papers from Scopus were reviewed. The results illustrate the complex effects of climate change on Southern African nature-based tourism, showing climate vulnerabilities in several areas in nature-based tourism destinations. Traditional seasons have become unstable due to changing weather patterns, which has decreased the attraction and accessibility of popular nature-based destinations in Southern Africa. This is especially the case during droughts and other harsh weather events that reduce the visibility of wildlife and tourism infrastructure. Because fewer people visit these destinations and livelihoods are disturbed, communities that depend on tourism lose money and experience increased poverty. Also, biodiversity is threatened, which impacts the iconic species and habitat integrity essential for wildlife tourism. Rising sea levels and coral bleaching further jeopardise coastal areas popular for nature activities like fishing, sea diving, and whitewater rafting. On the other hand, health risks from water scarcity and sanitation challenges pose additional deterrents to tourism. However, adaptive measures, such as sustainable water management, energy-efficient technologies, and eco-friendly practises in the tourism sector, are being implemented to mitigate these effects and enhance climate resilience. The findings highlight the need for a collaborative approach to climate change adaptation and sustainable development in nature-based destinations. It is recommended that government agencies enhance their institutional capacity, improve access to climate information, invest in climate-resilient infrastructure and engage and empower local communities. These actions may help respond more effectively to climate challenges and promote the sustainable development of nature-based destinations.
