Climate Change Influence on Green Tourist Behaviour in Rural Destinations
摘要
Climate change remains a critical issue in contemporary discourse, manifesting prominently in the increasing prevalence of extreme weather events frequently covered in the media. The importance of this issue to the developmental agenda necessitates an examination of its impact on public perceptions and behaviours, particularly in the context of tourism and its related climate change mitigation and adaptation actions. This study investigated the influence of climate change on tourists’ attitudes towards climate change mitigation efforts. Data were collected from 278 Sun City International Resort tourists using a self-administered questionnaire distributed using QuestionPro. The findings of this study indicate that climate change-induced extreme weather events compel tourists to adopt more responsible behaviours towards combating climate change. However, it is noteworthy that only half of the respondents considered their carbon footprints while travelling. Additionally, 35% of tourists expressed a willingness to pay for carbon offsets available at the resort, while 50% preferred accommodations that offered environmentally sustainable options. Conversely, less focus was placed on preferences for a green diet. These results suggest a significant opportunity for the tourism industry to expand its green offerings to appeal to a growing segment of environmentally conscious tourists. Many tourists are prepared to pay for carbon offsets, suggesting that seamlessly incorporating this option into hotel payment systems could facilitate greater adoption. Moreover, the findings challenge hotels in developing and implementing measures that effectively account for and reduce the carbon footprint of tourists during their stay.
