Exploring the diversity within a seemingly rigidly defined notion of “civilization”, this chapter explores the repeated mobilization of such discourses and how these were understood, used and adapted by Sarajevo’s visual artists. Whereas some artists naturally picked up (or reused) traditional understandings of the term to process and externalize the nearly inexpressible personal experience of life under siege, others consciously mobilized it as a tool of communication, hoping to encourage international intervention. Others yet adapted accepted definitions to their own needs, for example ignoring associated moral meanings to simply speak of the physical effects of destruction on their lives.
