Montevideo’s architectural heritage, particularly that built between the early 19th to the mid-20th century, is characterised by the profuse incorporation of ornamental elements that creates the unique character of the building’s interior and exterior. Considering façades as a leading element of the outdoor space, playing a double role in constructing the face of the building and feeding the city collective memory, the importance of the existing ornamentation becomes evident by its ability to transmit messages, evoke feelings and sensations. Regarding wooden elements, there are examples dating from colonial times to the mid-20th century, highlighting the technical and artistic quality of Montevideo’s heritage. However, their technical, formal and symbolic characteristics have not been comprehensively studied, in order to value and protect them from natural ageing and deterioration caused by environmental factors and lack of maintenance. This presentation aims to establish the attributes of the carpentry present in Montevideo’s architectural heritage façades and to contribute to their dissemination, enhancement and conservation. Synthesising the work conducted by the project “Wood in the ornamentation of façades of national architecture. Contribution to its heritage valuation”. The research methodology involved examining primary sources, reviewing specialised literature and conducting fieldwork on a sample of 50 buildings containing 150 wooden elements. The results of this study provide an initial contribution to a field scarcely addressed within the context of Montevideo’s architectural and artistic heritage with a greater objective: to value the craftsmen that once made the city and obtain a greater appreciation of Montevideo’s rich architectural history.
