Arad is an important urban center situated in the western Romania. In the city center, the river Mures forms an ample loop containing one of the largest Vauban fortresses in Central Europe. The fortress has been until today under the control of the military and will soon be transferred to the city. A complex masterplan has been produced to reconnect the fortress with the city, to become the coordinating center of the urban area, a vector of identity, historic symbolism, sustainable development and environmental regeneration. The targets of the proposed intervention are: the “reactivation” of the fortress by cleaning, conserving and restoring the enclosure, the “remodeling” of the inner space by reusing the existing street pattern surrounding the central Arms Square, the landscaping of the entire fortified area and the reconnection with the city center. As a result, the city of Arad will be endowed with an immersive historic, cultural, artistic, recreational, and commercial platform of regional importance. This complex project was the result of a multidisciplinary collaboration be-tween architecture, urban planning, landscape design, restauration and engineer-ng. The team was in permanent contact with the local community and the civic organizations.
