The paper presents the damage observed after the 2023 seismic sequence in masonry buildings of the historical center of Antakya, the most affected town of the region. The historical center of Antakya includes buildings of vernacular architecture, as well as individually listed buildings. The buildings can be distinguished in those made of unreinforced stone masonry and in buildings composed of one or two lower stories made of unreinforced stone masonry and an upper story made of timber reinforced masonry. Based on visual inspection, the two structural systems identified in Antakya are briefly presented, along with the typical damage observed. Furthermore, the detrimental effect of some pre-earthquake interventions, including replacement of original timber floors and roofs by RC slabs, to historical buildings is presented and commented upon.
