Monitoring for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage and Visitor Satisfaction

The use of climate control strategies in museums has been common practice for several decades to optimize the correct conservation of the art collections within museum environments. At the same time, the well-being and satisfaction of the visitors guarantee the art collection enhancement, creating ideal conditions for the visitors and encouraging their permanence in the exhibition spaces. A series of guidelines and standardization rules are applied both on a European and Italian scale in the definition of such strategies. In the framework of conservation and management of cultural heritage, ENEA contributes to the evaluation of the indoor conditions and the index of interest in artwork of a museum, by monitoring both microclimatic and visitor interest parameters. In this way, the museum management can understand the interaction that takes place between visitors and the surrounding environment and can improve the conditions for the enhancement and enjoyment of Cultural Heritage. The methodology developed by ENEA has been applied to the collection of the “Pinacoteca Provinciale di Potenza”, which includes paintings of famed artists such as Carlo Levi, Italo Squitieri, Vincenzo Claps e Luigi Guerricchio. The research activity has been developed in the framework of the Basilicata Heritage Smart Lab project, which involved around 40 companies from the Cultural and Creative Industries Cluster of Basilicata, and three public research bodies.
