Concerning a panorama of international experiences, this paper proposes a framework for the strategies most commonly employed in the decarbonisation of cities at European level, with the aim of attaining climatic neutrality. Over the last few years, as an active participant in the processes of mitigation and adaptation, architecture has begun to experiment with new design and process practices that in many cases centred on off-site construction strategies. The processes of pre-fabrication and industrialisation of an architectural project can offer a network of support for the implementation and development of projects that would otherwise be problematic. Amongst the many scenarios that can be visualised nowadays are redevelopment of existing social housing and, more generally, residential buildings, which in some cases have had additional floors built, or are used as temporary accommodation for residents affected by the redevelopment projects; the building of temporary scholastic accommodation so that existing buildings can be redeveloped; or emergency accommodation designed for brief life cycles designed for deconstruction and disassembly. The case studies examined are the result of ongoing research at national and international level by the authors and highlight an evolutionary trajectory in the AEC industry, centred on an increase in productivity, technological innovation and collaborative projects.
