The application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques and tools to various phases of the construction process, particularly in its implementations of machine learning, robotic fabrication, and knowledge-based reasoning, currently animates the discussion on the technological advancements in the AEC industry. While some principles are novel, others have their roots in insights expressed when the concepts of informational and semantic modeling in architecture and engineering were introduced. AI emerges as a natural complement to digitalization processes like Building Information Modeling (BIM). However, current AI-BIM integration efforts primarily focus on contemporary constructions and new building industrialization, neglecting the complexities of existing structures and their cultural significance. While AI could significantly enhance our understanding and management of historic buildings, this potential remains largely unexplored. After a general review of the state of the art on the use of BIM and AI, the attention will be dedicated to this specific domain. This paper aims to investigate the emerging perspectives outlining important research trends, in consideration of their strengths and weaknesses, in order to identify potential gaps in knowledge and to establish possible future research pathways for conservation, restoration, and maintenance of existing buildings.
