History and Importance of Food Processing
摘要
From basic preservation methods to complex industrial processes, food processing has played a crucial role in human progress. To increase food’s shelf life and guarantee survival amid a shortage, early techniques including drying, salting, and fermenting were developed. With the advent of mass manufacturing and mechanization during the Industrial Revolution, food preparation, distribution, and storage underwent a radical change. In order to satisfy the needs of an expanding population, wholesome, secure, and practical products have been made possible by developments in food science and technology. Food processing is essential for increasing food safety, reducing waste, and boosting nutritional content. It also boosts the economy by creating jobs and expanding the market. Despite challenges like sustainability and health concerns, food processing remains crucial in ensuring global food security, reducing post-harvest losses, and adapting to changing consumer preferences. This chapter explores the historical evolution and multifaceted importance of food processing.
