This chapter contains some basic preliminary tools, which will be essential for the sequel. In particular, we will present some properties of convex functions, the classical Du Bois-Reymond Lemma, the concept of Euler-Lagrange equation (in classical and weak forms) and the so-called Dirichlet principle. Some important consequences of convexity will be highlighted, as well.
