This chapter explores the need for culturally competent (AI) devices and socially assistive robots (SARs) in healthcare, the challenges, strategies, and ethical issues faced by the developers and users of these technologies, the benefits of using the new technologies, and the urgent need for training healthcare professionals to work with the new AI and robotics technologies. The CARESSES project is introduced as a useful example for the development of culturally competent socially assistive humanoid robots.
