To think about nerve injuries and motor function of the leg, one should put on an engineer’s hat and think of an electrical schematic. As mentioned above, if you lesion the sciatic then all three compartments of the leg are lost, if the common fibular is damaged then both the anterior and lateral compartments are lost, and if the deep fibular is damaged the anterior compartment is lost, and with damage to just the superficial fibular the lateral compartment is lost. Now we also need to go in reverse here and think about patient scenarios. If a patient has difficulties with eversion, then you would equate this to the lateral compartment which is superficial fibular nerve. If both eversion and dorsiflexion are compromised, then you would conclude that the lateral and anterior compartments are affected, which would result from an injury to the common fibular nerve.
