I am a single sodium molecule on a long, tortuous journey through the nephron and the collecting duct. Just a moment ago, I was in the blood stream, specifically a specialized capillary tuft, called the glomerulus. The capillary wall of the glomerulus has a fenestrated wall, and combined with its high pressure, I was able to slip through the capillary wall. Then I crossed the visceral layer of Bowman’s capsule and entered the urinary space. And I am not alone. I am traveling with 249 of my closest friends—other sodium molecules.
