The head and neck region is typically considered the most complicated part of a gross anatomy course. There is more in this small space than either of the limbs. As an undergraduate student you might have learned a mnemonic for the cranial nerves so that you could answer a question such as: Does cranial nerve (CN) V have, sensory, of both types of fibers? You can forget the mnemonics for the names of the cranial nerves, or for which nerves are motor, sensory, or both. These sayings will not get you far in medical gross anatomy. The pertinent point is not whether CN V is motor, sensory, or both—that is a given. The question is: How many of the 51 branches of CN V can you name? And which branches are motor, sensory, or both?
