Fundamentals of Brief Existential Psychotherapy
摘要
Brief Existential Psychotherapy is a short-term intervention based on a temporal view of existence, addressing both transversal (the crisis) and longitudinal (one’s life trajectory) aspects. BEP incorporates various philosophical themes, not only those from the existential area. The judgments we make of events, from the Greek philosopher Epictetus and the concept of life as a flow, from Heraclitus are two cornerstones of the work. Some innovative concepts such as existential empathy, cognition, and existential insight and the idea of a life map suggest that life is a composition of meanings. BEP advocates a holistic view of the patient in accordance with classical psychopathology, with an interpretation of phenomenological and biological aspects. It sees the weaknesses but also the strengths of the individual, the threats, and the opportunities in their life situation (existential SWOT analysis). The purpose of the treatment is to overcome the crisis generated by a serious life event and identify or reconstruct a self-project in the future, with meaning and purpose in life.
