London Hackspace is a mutual space for production using a variety of advanced technologies. In this case study interviews and observations show how ‘hobbying’ can produce bespoke and innovative items, around social need, that would not otherwise produced in capitalism. Despite the high-technology, robotic and automated aspects within the Hackspace, in practice conviviality and the production of convivial tools were part of the culture of the space. Hackspaces can be described as utopian, convivial spaces, yet are not invulnerable from recuperation within capitalism.
