The unsustainable practice of using end-of-life tyres (ELTs) as fuel for meat preparation in West Africa poses significant environmental and public health risks. This study examined heavy metal contamination in tyre-grilled meats from Lomé, Togo, analysing samples of beef and goat meat for cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), iron (Fe), and mercury (Hg) using atomic absorption spectrometry. Results revealed concerning levels of heavy metals exceeding European Union Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs), with unwashed beef skin containing particularly high concentrations (Cd: 0.124 mg/kg, Pb: 0.715 mg/kg, Hg: 1792.475 µg/kg). Comparative analysis with similar studies across West Africa demonstrated consistently elevated heavy metal concentrations in tyre-singed meats. The findings highlight the urgent need for structured tyre recycling systems and alternative meat preparation methods to protect public health and environmental safety. Implementation of tyre buyback programmes and raising awareness about health risks are recommended as crucial steps toward sustainable ELT management in the region.
