Immigrant faculty of color from various parts of the world encounter many hurdles as they chase the American dream. Although immigration surges are not new in the United States, the recent influx of families at the border has sparked further calls for immigration reformation. While much attention has been placed on unauthorized migrants, there is limited discussion about nonimmigrants and immigrants, particularly faculty of color in higher education who are encountering or have encountered grueling processes on the path to obtaining permanent residency. In this chapter, resilience theory is utilized as a framework as it foregrounds strengths over problems and offers a lens for investigating their lived experiences. A quantitative study that was part of a larger mixed methods study was utilized to examine the relationship between faculty’s resilience and their success in the academy as they navigated immigration hurdles and the tenure and promotion process. Despite the challenges faculty encountered, they described determination, tenacity, and grit with which they straddled personal and professional roles and responsibilities.
