Management of Mango Diseases Under Global Climate Shifts

Mango fruit among other horticultural produce invariably suffers postharvest diseases that are of concern given international trade, storage, marketing and cause significant economic losses to the producers and exporters, especially in the disadvantaged countries. This chapter attempts to consider the most crucial and fresh unaddressed research questions related to the control of postharvest diseases of mangoes with particular regard to anthracnose, stem-end rot and bacterial black spot, which deteriorate mango in its quality and make storage a challenge. Pre-harvest conditions, environmental factors and storage methods commonly used in mango-producing countries, including Pakistan are identified as key contributors to disease development. The existing management tools, including chemical treatments, cold storage and modified atmospheric packaging are reviewed for their efficacy and limitations. Also, some of the alternatives to traditional postharvest management strategies, such as biological control, phytosanitary measures and novel approaches like nanotechnology and sensor based disease detection are examined for their applicability in controlling postharvest diseases of mango. This chapter stresses the necessity of ongoing global collaboration and adequate funding of research for the improvement of mango postharvest quality by introducing new dimensions, such as early disease diagnosis and improved long-term storage.
