Age increases the risk for many health conditions including cardiovascular disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, and dementia. Various factors contribute to increased risk of developing age-related conditions including general wear and tear on our body, exposure to environmental pollutants, and lifestyle factors such as diet, alcohol consumption, smoking, and physical activity. Health problems are found to amplify the problems of loneliness for older adults by reducing social contact. As has been indicated, the experiences of mental illness, for example, have been found to have an impact on loneliness by limiting social interaction.
