Disasters cause huge impacts in Brazil, including factors either directly or indirectly related to displacements, such as the loss of belongings, damage to properties and livelihoods, and poor conditions of work. The most emblematic examples refer to displaced persons from the Brazilian Northeast region to the South, due to the extreme effects of drought in the Northeast semi-arid region, such as food insecurity or restricted access to drinking water. However, recent megadisasters have triggered new challenges to disaster management policies, requiring large-scale disaster response actions and actions to include new social groups, such as refugees. In this chapter, the authors also explore other cases in Brazil, such as the Brazilian Legal Amazon and Rio Grande do Sul State. They present some data on the most common events and their impacts and discuss their connection to development, sustainability, poverty, inequalities, and exploitation of natural resources.
