What lies at the intersection of trust, ethics, decentralization, and artificial intelligence (AI) within the context of our rapidly advancing technological landscape and its socio-ecological impacts? Specifically, what are the philosophical and practical challenges imposed by centralized power structures? In this chapter, we investigate how a shift toward decentralized systems, such as Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT), could address the ethical and governance deficiencies evident in our current global framework and how AI systems can potentially emerge as unbiased, non-ideological, and pragmatic stakeholders for non-human life and the biosphere overall, a perspective entirely missing from traditional discussions focused predominantly on human-centric concerns. The emergence of AI and DLT offers novel tools and blueprints for reconfiguring human interaction and governance, possibly enabling more adaptive, resilient, and sustainable systems and leading to more equitable and effective societal structures. Informed by insights from complex systems theory and the collective intelligence seen in nature, including the mechanisms of self-organization, our human affairs are recontextualized as networks of interaction embedded within the interconnected biosphere. Can such a realization help address the global challenges we are facing today?
