The Comets of 1618: Tales from India
摘要
In 1618, three bright comets appeared in quick succession that caused great sensation in Europe and led to extensive discussions in books and pamphlets. Two of the comets that appeared in November 1618 were followed independently by astronomers in India. Jahangir, the fourth Mughal Emperor, recorded the apparitions during a Royal journey from Dohad to Agra, the capital city of the Empire. From the dates in his Memoirs, Jahangir turns out to be an independent discoverer. Meanwhile, Father Venceslaus Kirwitzer and fellow Jesuits observed the comets in Goa and Cochin. Their first observations also correspond to the discovery dates of the comets. Fr. Kirwitzer published the observations in 1620 in a short treatise where he states that he also viewed these comets with a ‘tubo optico’. This is the first recorded use of a telescope in India.
