Migraine is a complex, neurological disorder composed of several phases whose phenotype overlaps. The premonitory (prodrome) phase consists of non-painful symptoms occurring up to 3 days before the onset of head pain. The aura phase is one of the transient neurological features in about one-third of patients. The headache manifests as often unilateral head pain of moderate to severe intensity aggravated by movement, while the postdromal phase occurs up to 2 days after headache resolution. A combination of bench-based and human clinical and experimental work has shed considerable light on migraine, and its neurological and neuropharmacological basis.
