The transition from a linear to a circular economy is essential for addressing resource constraints and environmental degradation, a shift advocated by policymakers. This shift affects every stage of the value chain, from raw material extraction to reintegration into production cycles, making it highly relevant for global production networks with globally distributed value creation and usage. However, the reconfiguration of these networks towards circularity brings significant uncertainty due to the lack of transparency regarding its potential impacts on material streams and the sustainability benefit. Leveraging data models to digitally model circular production networks can substantially reduce this uncertainty. This paper presents an approach to extend an existing data model, traditionally used for linear production networks, to accommodate the circularity of products and packaging materials. Using a circular material stream and the Linear Flow Index, ten operators and 37 auxiliary operators are identified in the data model extension.
