This text aims to discuss the influences on the teaching of mathematics at the end of the nineteenth century brought by Claude-Henry Gorceix, a Frenchman who created the School of Mines of Ouro Preto. The historical context in which the institution was established is presented, followed by a comparison of the admission exams, preparatory courses, and teacher selection with some French institutions. Another noteworthy point is the challenges faced in implementing the decimal metric system in Brazilian schools and society during that time. Based on the investigations conducted, it can be concluded that Gorceix introduced advanced mathematical concepts, such as Differential and Integral Calculus, prior to higher education, along with a teaching methodology that emphasized reasoning over memorization.
