Microplastic in waste water and performance of WWTP (Wastewater treatment plant) in China is presented and compared with other studies mainly from Sweden. The commonly used treatment processes in municipal wastewater treatment plants are introduced and compared regarding to microplastic removal. Literature review has been carried out mainly from Chinese and Swedish study and different microplastic removal processes and techniques are discussed to prevent and reduce emissions of microplastics. Results show that treatment combinations of screen-grit chamber+coagulan+ pre-sedimentation, MBR, combinations of coagulation and sand filtration gave the best microplastic removal in primary, secondary and tertiary process. In addition, it is also found that coagulation can effectively remove microplastics or strengthen the removal of microplastics, which could apply in the primary, secondary and tertiary treatment processes of WWTP in China. This study can further provide technical and data support for the removal of microplastics from actual wastewater.
