Operation and Maintenance Essentials and Cost Estimation of the Tailwater Wetland Coupled with Wastewater Treatment Plant

Constructed wetlands are ecosystems consisting of water and plants. They serve multiple purposes, including sewage purification, biodiversity protection, microclimate regulation, and habitat preservation. Today, they are globally recognized as environmentally friendly “Green” sewage treatment technologies and are widely employed for industrial wastewater and domestic sewage treatment. While numerous studies have been conducted on plant and filler selection and decontamination capabilities of constructed wetlands, along with practical applications, challenges still persist in the field of constructed wetland wastewater treatment projects. However, in the field of constructed wetland sewage treatment projects, there is still the phenomenon of emphasizing construction while neglecting management, and the lack of a scientific and effective operation and management system result in problems such as blockage, decreased treatment efficiency, irregular operation, and subpar landscape aesthetics. To address these challenges, a tailwater wetland coupled with wastewater treatment plant in Yangtze River Basin was taken as a case, to propose specific requirements and measures for the operation and maintenance of constructed wetlands, focusing on water quantity, water level, vegetation, packing materials, aquatic animals, and thermal insulation. The objective is to maximize the multi functionality of constructed wetlands and provide theoretical and technical support for their sustainable operation.
